Boylesports – 2nd chances

I think I’ve been a bit biased towards ads in the video format on my blogging endeavours so far, so I’ll make a quick post today that’s dedicated to a great print ad. It’s from a group of advertisers who I consider to be the good guys of the industry (meaning they’re actually competent and creative) and they haven’t disappointed me with this fairly recent campaign for Boylesports, an Irish bookmaker.

The campaign was made exclusively for the famous Cheltenham horse racing festival, and boasted a money-back special if you bet on a horse that finished 2nd, instead of winning, in any of the races on the first day of the festival. As a man who just loves to throw money at casinos and bookmakers, I can tell you that that’s a pretty sweet deal. After considering the target market (basically any man with grey hair), I didn’t even need to analyse any advertising theory involved; sometimes you just have to applaud outstanding creativity. But applaud it quietly in your head, otherwise people might think you’re crazy. Here’s the ad…

And here it is standing proudly in Dublin's city centre...
